Event Administration Tool

2007

Client: Daily Hampshire Gazette

Skills: Interface design, front-end production (XHTML, CSS), back-end programming (Coldfusion, MySQL)

Problem: Editors at the Daily Hampshire Gazette needed a better way to manage public event listings. A system was needed to allow multiple users to add and edit events as well as create custom exports for the print edition of the newspaper.

Solution: A web-based system built with Coldfusion and MySQL. I built an easy to use interface that made use of AJAX techniques to improve the user experience and speed up the entry of events. The MySQL database design allowed multiple user permissions levels, efficient tagging of events, and full management of event venue records.

Skills: Interface design, front-end production (XHTML, CSS), back-end programming (Coldfusion, MySQL)

Problem: New England Center for Cosmetology Education and New England Center for Esthetics Education are sister schools in Northampton, MA. The schools needed a way to maintain ongoing relationships with alumni.

Solution: A Coldfusion and MySQL system that allows alumni to create a profile, read news and announcements, browse and post job openings, participate in discussion forums and privately contact the school. Administrative users have additional tools to manage all aspects of the site.

2006

Client: Daily Hampshire Gazette

Skills: Visual design, front-end production (XHTML, CSS), back-end programming (Coldfusion, MySQL)

Problem: Present information to voters about state and local political races.

Solution: A Coldfusion and MySQL powered site, combining local news coverage with information about candidates and ballot questions. On election night, editors used a custom back-end system to provide continually updated vote totals and election results.

Adult Video Store Debate

2007

Client: Daily Hampshire Gazette

Skills: Visual design, front-end production (XHTML, CSS), back-end programming (Coldfusion, MySQL)

Problem: Provide a single location for the variety of voices debating a proposed adult video store in Northampton, MA.

Solution: A Coldfusion and MySQL powered site that paired newspaper stories and opinion pieces with blog posts written by community members. Issue specific blogs, along with one-off blog posts pulled in from Technorati, were aggregated and presented alongside stories appearing in the newspaper. A custom back-end system allowed the online editor to weed out any distasteful posts.
